What is SAP R/3 Logistics Information System (LIS)

The logistics information system (LIS) is a central integrated information system where one can create specific tables that are updated at specific stages and that can be used to report on values contained in specific fields. This allows the information systems to be used for controlling, monitoring, and planning purposes.

The LIS can be broken down into each logistics application’s individual information system, such as the sales information system (SIS). The other logistics applications that have their own information systems yet contribute to the LIS are as follows

  • Inventory management
  • Purchasing
  • Shop floor control
  • Plant maintenance
  • Quality management
  • Retail information system

An example of where an LIS structure is used for planning is in product allocation. Product allocation uses a structure to allocate limited stock to a customer (the SAP standard has an example of S140 with planning type COMMIT, viewable from [MC94]). This enables the customer to purchase specific stock up to the amount allocated to him in the planning structure for that specific time period.

In theory, how this happens is that the structure is created, allocating the quantity of specific stock the specific customer is allowed to order for a specific time period. When a sales order is created, the system updates this structure with the called-off quantity. Should the called-off quantity exceed the allowed quantity, the system then determines the remaining amount to be called off and prompts the user to change his order quantity to match the available amount. SAP has standard sales information structures (SIS) that are already configured in the system; these information structures are used for reporting purposes.
